Blade pressure settings #
The blade pressure determines how deeply the cutting blade cuts into the material.
Vinyl, for example, is a relatively thin and flexible material and therefore requires less pressure than a thicker, more rigid material such as aluminium polyester. The extent to which the blade glides through the material also varies depending on the material type.
Are the labels not being cut deeply enough, or are they being cut too deeply? See below how to resolve this.
As a rule of thumb, the tip of the cutting blade should protrude approximately 0.5 mm.
To adjust this, turn the top cap of the blade holder clockwise to increase the blade protrusion, or counterclockwise to decrease the blade protrusion.
Is your cutting plotter cutting just slightly too deep or not quite deep enough? In that case, you can leave the blade holder installed in the printer and adjust it by turning the cap to achieve the desired setting.
If you want to make sure that the blade tip protrudes far enough, we recommend removing the entire blade holder from the printer so you can more easily see how far the tip extends.
Default blade pressure settings. #
We generally recommend a blade pressure of approximately 40, up to a maximum of 50. You can check or change this by pressing the black cutting blade icon on the touchscreen. This will open the blade pressure settings screen.
1. Press + to increase the blade pressure or – to decrease the blade pressure.
Adjust the setting gradually until the desired cutting depth is achieved. In most cases, the optimal blade pressure is between 40 and 50.
2. Then press the blue Test Cut icon to perform a test cut.
3. Are you satisfied with these settings? Press the green button to confirm.
Would you like to discard the changes? Press the red button to cancel.
Blade pressure for laminated labels. #
The lamination function on your printer allows you to apply a protective layer to your labels. In most cases, the default settings will be sufficient. However, if you notice that your laminated labels are not being cut properly, you can adjust the blade pressure settings for laminated labels separately.

1. Press + to increase the blade pressure or – to decrease the blade pressure.
Adjust the setting gradually until the desired cutting depth is achieved.
2. Then press the blue Test Cut icon to perform a test cut.
3. Are you satisfied with these settings? Press the green button to confirm.
Would you like to discard the changes? Press the red button to cancel.
Not resolved? #
Have you followed the steps above and is your SMS-R1 still not cutting correctly? If so, there is a good chance that the (cutting) blade is worn or defective. Read this article to learn how to replace it easily.
